Mike Guerriero has made one of his biggest dreams come true. The New Jersey native now owns two businesses at the ripe age of 25. His business is Gelotti’s Ice Cream, and after owning the Caldwell location for only two years, he is proud to open the doors of his “more elegant” and lovingly designed Montclair shop, just in time for the official start of the season.
Guerriero, who started working at Gelotti’s headquarters in Paterson as a teenager, explained that a Montclair location has been nearly a decade in the works. Guerriero carefully watched the Valley & Bloom building project and initially had a contract for a retail space. But when the real estate developers proved to be inflexible, Guerriero decided to take his business elsewhere.
Soon, he was looking at a 2,600-square-foot space on the corner of Bloomfield and Maple Place that had been vacated by Merit Liquor, which was moving down the block. There was parking, great foot traffic and proximity to many restaurants. Moreover, the landlord was giving him cart blanche to completely reconstruct the space and design it the way he wanted. It was a perfect fit.
Gelotti’s boasts more than 60 flavors of cold, sweet treats on any given day. Ice cream choices include the classics as well as rum raisin, vanilla peanut butter, s’mores, maple walnut coffee, mint oreo, and kids favorites cotton candy and cake batter. Special, seasonal flavors can include pumpkin pie, strawberry cheesecake, candy cane, and caramel pretzel. For gelato purists, there are 16 options such as amaretto cookie, tiramisu, nutella, and pistachio and texturally delicious rice crispy and kit kat.
But wait, there’s more—dairy-free options include surprisingly rich sorbet in blueberry basil and lemon as well as eight varieties of Italian ice. Guerriero loves creating new ice cream flavors, so patrons will never have to worry about getting bored.
The Montclair shop also has a crepe station and patrons can choose their filling, topping and ice cream flavor. Gelotti’s is well known for its cakes and novelties, which are stocked in the store but also can be specially ordered.
Guerriero is a big believer in giving back to the community, and he supports Gelotti’s employment outreach program “Cones for a Cause” that works with Eva’s Village, a social service organization. Gelotti’s hires individuals who have been helped by this program to work in its stores. “As much as we’re profiting, we try to give back,” Guerriero said. “We make ice cream to bring people together.”
